Adults, ages 20 and over

Adult BMI calculator

See where your body mass index sits, the weight range that matches your height and, if you like, what your waist adds to the picture. Made for women and men, in pounds or kilograms.

Please read first

BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not measure body fat, muscle or bone, or where your body carries weight, so it can read differently for athletes, older adults, pregnancy and many body types.

This tool is for adults, ages 20 and over. For ages 2 to 19, BMI is read against growth charts that use age and sex, so please use the CDC child and teen calculator below or ask your provider. It is not medical advice: please talk with your provider or our team about what your numbers mean for you.

Everything stays on this page. What you type is not saved and is not sent anywhere.

BMI is only part of the picture

BMI uses just two numbers, your height and your weight. It cannot tell muscle from fat or show where your body carries weight.

Our body composition analyzer can estimate body fat, muscle, skeletal muscle, body water, protein, minerals and bone mass. These are estimates, not a diagnosis. Your provider goes through them with you, together with your goals and health history.

What is BMI?

Body mass index (BMI) is a number that compares your weight with your height. Health professionals use it as a quick screening tool: a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict on your health.

How BMI is calculated

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters, squared. In pounds and inches the same idea is 703 × pounds ÷ inches². The formula uses only height and weight: it does not use your age or sex.

BMI = kg ÷ m² (or 703 × lb ÷ in²)

Adult BMI ranges

For adults 20 and over, the same ranges apply to women and men at every age. These are the names the CDC uses for each range. They describe a number, not a person.

Adult BMI ranges and their CDC names
BMICDC name
Under 18.5Underweight
18.5 to 24.9Healthy weight
25 to 29.9Overweight
30 to 34.9Obesity, class 1
35 to 39.9Obesity, class 2
40 or moreObesity, class 3 (severe)

Does age or sex change adult BMI?

No. For adults 20 and over, BMI is worked out from height and weight alone, and the ranges are the same for women and men at every age. That is why this calculator does not ask for your age. Age and sex matter for children and teens (ages 2 to 19), whose BMI is compared with growth charts. Women and men do tend to carry weight differently, which is why the optional waist guidance has a line for each.

What BMI does not tell you

It cannot tell muscle from fat, it ignores where weight is carried, and it can read differently across body types, backgrounds and life stages such as pregnancy. That is why we pair it with a conversation.

When it can help to talk with a professional

There is no single number that means you must act. It can help to talk with a provider if:

  • your BMI is outside the healthy range and you would like to understand what it means for you
  • you have a health condition, take medication, or have a family history that worries you
  • your weight has changed and you are not sure why
  • you would like a plan that fits your life and your goals
